Electric Cars are Gay

Why is it even a story that a comedy film used “gay” in an off-hand way to refer to something that doesn’t conform to society’s benchmark for manliness? This is probably the least offensive use of the word “gay” in the history of comedy.

In case you haven’t a clue what I’m talking about, a trailer for an upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy has Vaughn referring to electric cars as being gay. Not homosexual, he says. Gay as in mom and dad chaperoning the prom. Something like that. I’m paraphrasing from memory hearing it earlier today.

Vindictus: Knee-Jerk Reaction

Vindictus is a promising new free-to-play online roleplaying game that launched in Open Beta yesterday. It has actually been around for some time in the West under the title Mabinogi Heroes; it has at last gotten its port to the North American market. I’ve had my eye on the game for a while, and I downloaded the client yesterday to play around with it. But before I get to that…

I’ve tried out a number of free-to-play games, and I’ve rarely found them to be all that good. My benchmark is, “would I pay for this?” and by that guideline, most of them fall down. Though some are, surely, better than others and perhaps fine for what they are (i.e., free-to-play), but in the final analysis, they always lack the polish of the paid for games like EVE Online or Age of Conan.

I have these movies on DVD (an older edition, but still fairly well stocked with extras) and they talk about this quite a bit. They fired him because he wasn’t funny. I guess they were impressed with his acting, but while watching the dailies or whatever, they thought it felt too much like a drama and he couldn’t lighten up enough.

I don’t think anybody could argue that they didn’t make the right choice. Fuck Stoltz.

  • Justin Garrett Blum says:

You were more blunt about it, but yeah. The only time I ever remember Eric Stoltz being funny was in Pulp Fiction.

  • fuwalda says:

I’m gonna make a chop that’s a picture of Stoltzie saying “I’d hit that!!… and then the studio would have Michael J. Fox hit it again because I sucked so bad at it.”

  • fuwalda says:

And then I’m gonna do a Family Circus chop where Billy is watching that deleted scene and he goes, “Even *I* know Eric Stoltz sucks, and I’m functionally retarded!”

  • Justin Garrett Blum says:

Somebody probably already made both of those chops.

The funny thing is that when I saw Eric Stoltz in those scenes, my brain had a hard time accepting it, and it felt as though I was looking at some sort of Forrest Gump style insertion-by-special-effects.

  • fuwalda says:

That’s hilarious! And you’re absolutely right.

Alternate Dimension McFly

I’ve always been a big fan of the Back to the Future movies, so it’s sort of amazing that I’d never heard that Robert Zemeckis did five weeks of shooting with Eric Stoltz in the Marty McFly role instead of Michael J. Fox. In fact, that’s kind of mindblowing.

Apparently, the 25th Anniversary DVD collection of the films contains some of the original footage. On a side note, why don’t I own these movies on DVD yet?

“Frank Langella‚Äôs character was an NSA employee who was struck by lightning and somehow got some sort of extra-terrestrial intelligence beamed into his head.”

That’s just about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

  • Justin Garrett Blum says:

I found out later it’s a film by the same guy who did Donnie Darko…and that makes sense. The science fiction elements of The Box were just uninteresting to me, and frankly, felt completely out of place in the story. I swear, there were whole plot points that were never even really explained and really had nothing at all to do with the central drama.

I didn’t like Donnie Darko, but even if you did, maybe you can understand how this guy could make a really dumb, indulgent film.

  • fuwalda says:

Donnie Darko was a dumb, indulgent film. That’s one of those films that people love, and I’ll never understand why. It sucked. This movie looked stupid too.

Like you said, anybody who would press the button is a dick, so the trailer for this movie never interested me. Why would I watch a movie that is centered around a moral dilemma that even a four year old wouldn’t have trouble resolving? Just don’t press the button. I’m not saying there aren’t people out there who won’t press the button. I’m simply saying that I don’t want to watch a movie about those people.

And it’s a shame because that movie has a really cool cast. When is that guy from X-Men going to be in another good movie already? Also, Frank Langella may have the record for being the best actor who’s been in the most awful movies.

  • Justin Garrett Blum says:

I’m glad somebody else is willing to say that Donnie Darko sucked.

  • fuwalda says:

I’m offended to even share the same name as that movie.

Spoilers: The Box

I’m going to call a spade a spade on this one and simply say that The Box was the most boring film that I’ve seen in a long time. In fact, it took me two attempts to make it through the film. Once, about a month ago, I tried and fell asleep after about a half an hour (my wife after about five minutes), and then last night, I finally picked it up about 45 minutes in and half-watched it through to the end.

Consequently, I’m not qualified to provide a legitimate review of this film, nor have I any desire to, really, since it’s hardly worth the time. Instead, I’ll merely spoil it for you below the “Read More”.

Inspector Lewis

So the other day at work, some dude with whom I occasionally work a service desk asked me if I ever watched the Inspector Lewis mysteries that sometimes play on PBS as part of the Masterpiece Theater series. I haven’t, so I had no idea about whom he was speaking when he informed me that there’s a guy on the show who looks just like me.

Man, I don’t know…I’m going to let you be the judge. I have to assume he means this blond guy, an actor named Laurence Fox.
