Why is it even a story that a comedy film used “gay” in an off-hand way to refer to something that doesn’t conform to society’s benchmark for manliness? This is probably the least offensive use of the word “gay” in the history of comedy.
In case you haven’t a clue what I’m talking about, a trailer for an upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy has Vaughn referring to electric cars as being gay. Not homosexual, he says. Gay as in mom and dad chaperoning the prom. Something like that. I’m paraphrasing from memory hearing it earlier today.
I literally can’t understand why anybody would be offended by this. If I told somebody I wanted to purchase a Porsche and somebody said in a pejorative sense, “That’s so hetero of you,” I really wouldn’t give a shit. Can somebody explain this in a way that a (perhaps) horribly insensitive heterosexual man can understand?
For the record, I’ve got absolutely no problem with homosexuals.
